De expositie | The exhibition
'Ongebroken' is een expositie van werk van kunstenaars met ME en kinderen met ME. Zij is oorspronkelijk in het voorjaar van 2026 georganiseerd in het Treehouse op het NDSM-terrein in Amsterdam, en reist nu rond.
De vele tienduizenden ME (Myalgische Encephalomyelitis) patiënten in ons land leven onzichtbare levens voor de buitenwereld. Door hun ernstige ziekte zijn deze patiënten vaak aan huis gebonden en is op bezoek gaan of bezoek ontvangen vrijwel onmogelijk. Daarbovenop wordt ME door artsen veelal niet herkend en door de zorg en de buitenwereld zelfs niet erkend.
Met deze expositie willen wij laten zien dat ME, ondanks dat het nauwelijks zichtbaar en in het nieuws is, wel degelijk bestaat en dat de vele vooroordelen en aannames over deze ziekte geen recht doen aan de ingrijpende werkelijkheid. Dat doen we door op een toegankelijke manier werk van buitengewoon getalenteerde kunstenaars met ME te laten zien. Daarmee hopen wij vanuit (wils)kracht en creativiteit, impliciet de ernst van ME te tonen en daarmee zeer verdiend aandacht te vragen voor zowel de kinderen, de kunstenaars en de duizenden patiënten met ME die onopgemerkt en grotendeels vergeten in Nederland leven achter gesloten deuren.
De expositie bestaat uit imposante schilderijen van Mascha Delena, markante tekeningen van Ilse Sjouke, foto’s en films van de voormalig professioneel balletdanser Anil van der Zee, aangrijpende teksten van Martine Brandt en prachtige, ontroerende kunstwerken van kinderen met ME.
After the exhibition in the Treehouse in Amsterdam from April 29 until May 5, 2026, ‘Unbroken’ is now travelling.
Our first stop was the ISLC-PAIS conference that was held in Amsterdam from August 26 to 29, 2026.
The many tens of thousands of people with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) in our country live largely invisible lives. Because of the severity of their illness, many are housebound; making visits and receiving visitors is extremely difficult or even impossible. Furthermore, ME is still too often not recognised or taken seriously by doctors, the wider medical community, and the general public.
With this exhibition we want to show that ME, despite being largely invisible and rarely considered newsworthy, does indeed exist, and that the many prejudices and assumptions surrounding this disease don’t do justice to its profound reality. We do this by presenting the work of extraordinarily talented artists with ME. We hope to show the serious nature of ME implicitly, through the capabilities, the willpower, the zest for life, and the creativity of these artists and children with ME. We hope to draw attention to these children, these artists and the many thousands of people with ME that remain behind closed doors, largely unseen and forgotten.
The exhibition consists of stunning paintings by Mascha Delena, striking drawings by Ilse Sjouke, photographs and films by former professional ballet dancer Anil van der Zee, poignant texts by Martine Brandt and deeply moving artworks created by children with ME.
